A few considerations are the salt level, whether it is mostly in the shade, or in the sun. It’s important to choose the right variety of grass for your property. There are a few varieties of grass used in South Florida: Centipede Grass, Bahiagrass. Zoysia, and the most common is St. Augustine.
Centipede Grass is a good choice is your lawn is mostly shaded. The disadvantage is this variety does not tolerate high levels of salt.
Bahiagrass is the best choice if your soil is mostly sand. It doesn’t require much fertilizer or water. The disadvantage is it can be susceptible to crabgrass overgrowth.
Zoysia does very well in a lot of sun and can also tolerate shade. It can handle a lot of foot traffic.
St. Augustine is the most common in Florida. It does very well in the sun and grows fast. It has no problem with the dry season and can tolerate salt. The disadvantage is it can be susceptible to chinch bugs.
Prior to installing the sod, we’ll either remove or till the old sod, then we’ll prepare the soil. We’ll start off with a soil test, to ensure it has the proper nutrients, and pH level, so your new lawn doesn't look like the old one. Then we’ll till the soil and grade it, so it is flush with the walkways. The next step is raking to remove any weeds, rocks, or debris. Then we’ll add any nutrients it needs, usually a fertilizer his in phosphate. But, in some cases, we may need to add healthy topsoil. We use quality healthy sod that is green and lush. Then the next step is sod installation. This is the laborious part, in the hot Florida sun.
The installation must be done as soon as it is delivered. We’ll lay it down quickly, with a crew. As we lay it down, it needs to be watered right away to keep it moist. Sod does not have a root system developed yet. So it has to be watered during installation and continued to be watered post-installation.
